GET READY FOR SPRING CLEANING DAY!
The weather is warming up and it is the perfect time to do some spring cleaning. Spring cleaning happens in spring because the weather is warm enough to leave the windows and doors open for fresh air, but still chilly enough that bugs and critters don’t want to come inside. Now, obviously, not everyone lives in climates like this anymore, but it’s still something everyone should do. A deep clean can really positively affect your environment and your mood.
With the right preparation and cleaning tools, you can give every room in your house a thorough spring cleaning for a fresh start to the new season. This step-by-step guide will help you start the season with a fresh, decluttered space and mind. And it’ll show you how to do it on a budget!
This post is all about Spring Cleaning on a Budget.
GET READY FOR SPRING CLEANING DAY!
Step 1: Develop a Spring Cleaning checklist
To start, make a list of everything that needs to be cleaned. Rooms, areas, and surfaces should all be included. This can feel overwhelming, so try breaking it down by room and most important to least (within each room). This will help you get the major things done in case the cleaning goes on more days than you thought.
Step 2: Gather supplies – cleaning tools, products, trash bags, etc.
Now that you know what needs to be cleaned, you can figure out what products are needed to do said cleaning. Take inventory first so you don’t buy things you already have.
Try to buy in bulk if you have a little extra cash so you don’t have to constantly go to the store for more supplies. AND LOOK FOR A SALE OR COUPON! Buy 1 Get 1 is your best friend when buying on a budget. I got 4 laundry detergents for the price of 2 and I haven’t bought trash bags in over 6 months since I bought the big box. Also, spending an extra $30 at the store three times is an easier hit mentally than spending $90 at once, even though you’re buying the same products and the money is coming from the same place.
If you’re testing out a product, don’t be afraid to take it back if you don’t like it. A lot of people figure it’s not worth it and end up not using it or throwing it out, but most stores’ return policies are pretty good. Use that money for a product you do like! Also, try not to buy into the hype of products online. They can be expensive, not worth it, or just not for you (except Scrub Daddys, or similar products. I swear by scrubbers in my life).
You also want to make sure you schedule blocks of time for each cleaning task. MAKE THEM REALISTIC. If cleaning your kitchen usually takes 20 minutes, add some extra time for deep cleaning. Don’t try to rush to get extra stuff done in your usual time frame. You will get burnt out so fast.
Step 3: Declutter First
There’s nothing worse than trying to clean and there’s just a bunch of stuff in your way. Either go through and throw things away, or move things in the area you’re cleaning at that moment off the floor, counters, etc. You don’t want to be vacuuming around clothes on the floor…
Go through each room and declutter surfaces, closets, drawers, and whatever else you may have. It’ll feel so much lighter. Donate what you can.
Step 4: Get Cleaning!!
If you need any more ideas for your list, this will help you. Remember to go room by room and it will go so much smoother.
Normal Cleaning (more frequent throughout the year, not all-inclusive)
– Wash Bedding (Bedroom)
– Disinfect sinks, counters, surfaces (Bathrooms and Kitchens)
– Organize pantry/cabinets and get rid of expired food (Kitchen)
– Sweep porches, decks, patios (Outdoor Spaces)
– Clean floors and baseboards (All Areas)
Deep Cleans (not all-inclusive)
– Dust ceiling fans, wash walls, shampoo carpets (All Areas)
– Sanitize surfaces, electronics, and soft furnishings (All Areas)
– Wash windows, mirrors, screens (All Areas)
– Flip/rotate mattresses (Bedrooms)
– Clean inside appliances (Kitchen)
– Clean out cabinets and drawers (Bathrooms and Kitchens)
– SCRUB showers, tubs, sinks, counters (Bathrooms and Kitchens)
– Wash outdoor furniture (Outdoor Spaces)
– Clean grills and outdoor cooking areas (Outdoor Spaces)
Step 5: Home Decor Updates
Now that the hard part is done, it’s time to have a little fun. You’ve cleaned and everything feels amazing, and you want to add a few new things. Now, these new things don’t have to be new to the home, they can just be new to the space! If you have an accent pillow on a chair in a room, try moving it to a different room/bedroom! The same goes for area rugs and artwork.
Once you’ve moved some things you have around, look into anything you may need that came up during your cleaning. Perhaps you need an extra bin in your pantry or need to replace something that was just extremely old. Make a list and try looking into secondhand stores for it if possible. My TV stand is from Goodwill and was $75!
If that’s not an option or you can’t find anything, check out stores like Ross and Marshalls. I can’t tell you the amount of amazing finds I’ve had at these two stores. Their furniture section is the first place I run to when I’m looking for a good deal I can’t find anywhere else. Then I’ll check HomeGoods, Target, Walmart, and Amazon! All of these stores have sales or just generally well-priced items.
The last thing you want to do is to arrange fresh flowers! Assuming you like them and don’t have allergies, fresh flowers are so pretty and can just give a nice feeling to a clean home. I like to get mine from Trader Joe’s when possible because their selection is super good.
