Decorating your home can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. With some creativity and smart shopping, you can give any room in your house a stylish new look on a budget.

This post is all about home decor on a budget.

Decorating on a Budget Guide

1. Set a Decorating Budget

Seeing a budget number can definitely be a gut punch, especially if that number is smaller than you’d like. However, setting a budget is the easiest way to keep yourself from overspending.

Now, you still want to make sure that the number is reasonable. If you need a new couch, new bedding, and a new rug, you probably won’t set a $100 budget. It’s just not realistic (usually). However, if you just need decorations, search for a few items you think you need and see what the average prices are. This will give you a better idea of what you’ll spend.

Make sure you set a budget for each room you want to decorate but focus first on high-impact areas like the living room, bedroom, and entryway. Save bathrooms/closets for later. Although these spaces are smaller and thus cost less to decorate, a living room needs more to look fuller than a bathroom, so you’ll need to spend more there.

2. Shop Discount and Dollar Stores

Discount stores like Five Below and any “Dollar” chain have some hidden gems in terms of décor. I know, I know, they’re far from the first place you’d think to look, but I promise in some of these stores I’ve found WONDERFUL, quality décor in, especially vases, baskets, and other accessories. Wal-Mart is also another good option, especially for things like chairs, tables, and picture frames. They have SO many options, especially during the Back-To-School season.

Also, while technically not a discount store, Target’s $5 section has some FANTASTIC seasonal décor. Check it out if there’s one nearby.

3. Check Stores Like HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls for Heavily Discounted Home Goods.

These stores have so much in them and I love finding items on clearance at these already affordable stores. I got my plant painting from Home Goods for $50! Ross might have a smaller selection of décor, but it’s still worth a try if there’s one in your area. My favorite of the four is Marshalls. I find that they usually have the best variety at the best price.

4. Buy Multipurpose Furniture

Multipurpose furniture can save you not only space but money too. Multipurpose furniture can be things like a Murphy bed, coffee tables with stool contraptions, dining room (and living room) tables with storage, and even couches with storage. Additionally, you can opt for furniture like ottomans and folding tables that serve multiple functions.

My personal favorite multi-purpose item is this coffee table with storage which helps maximize room.

5. Accessorize with Houseplants

Real or fake, houseplants are a great way to bring some greenery into your home. An easy way to do that is to add greenery with low-maintenance houseplants. Snake and ZZ plants are perfect options. You can group plants on shelves or windowsills for high visual impact.

Plants are nice too because they help freshen the air. Every time I walk into my home, I feel like the air quality is better than when I had no plants at all. The fake ones I have also take up those weird empty spaces that I do not know what to do with. And I know fake plants can be easier, so even if all you have or want are fake plants, that is perfectly fine!

6. Display Artwork Affordably

The first step to displaying artwork on a budget is to use your own photos or kids’ artwork in inexpensive frames for custom art. You can also buy affordable prints and posters online, and then frame them, like this picture below of some artwork in my home.

I love getting my posters and prints from Etsy. There are plenty of places online you can use, but I just like the variety of stores on the site. 80% of the artwork hung up in my home is from Etsy with Target and Amazon frames. It’s extremely affordable and customizable! It’s nice having something no one else has, but not paying an arm and a leg for it.

This post has been all about giving you a budget-friendly home decorating guide. With some savvy shopping and creative ideas, you can decorate your home in style on any budget. The most important thing is making a space that reflects your personality. It doesn’t matter what other people have, because your space will always be yours, not theirs. It won’t feel like home if it doesn’t feel like you.
